11 Assets for a Great Fiction Story

February 20, 20252 min read

In a previous blog, I shared the Story Brand model that you can follow when writing your book. If you missed it, you can find it here:

HOW TO WRITE FICTION: Tools that help propel your story

When I’m working with clients writing a fiction book, I often use theFabula Card Deckto help create the structure of the book. Fabula is a framework for fiction writers that helps you analyze, organize, and build your story.

I recommend using these tools to help you visually structure your book, then actually write the book in Scrivener software. I’ll post a blog about why I love Scrivener soon!

First, brainstorm and gather all the assets you want to include in the book.

ASSETS or BRAINSTORMING

assets

When you're writing your story there are many different elements that go into it. Developing your characters and subplots as well as creating the space they live in. These are essential parts of your story. They all contribute to a consistent narrative. These are your assets.

Here are some ideas for assets for your story:

  • Concept/Theme (General idea of your story)

  • Narrator (who is the narrator and does the narrator have his/her own story?)

  • Heroes (what are their needs and weaknesses)

  • Enemies (who are they and why do they fight the hero?)

  • Allies (why do they help the hero?)

  • Space (describe the world, drawings, pics, maps)

  • Subplot 1 (side story)

  • Subplot 2 (side story)

  • Mood board (inspirational ideas about the story)

  • Magical objects (any important objects that propel the story)

  • Form (techniques/style/language, formal aspects of your story)

  • Then, it’s time to develop the story.

Stay tuned! In our next post, we'll talk about the 14 steps your hero goes through and how to develop that in your story.
