Books from my reading stack
I am usually reading or listening to more than one book. Each of them has a different purpose and is teaching me something different. My current stack is quite varied.
Pony by R.J. Palacio.
This book is written for young readers and I'm finding it thoroughly entertaining. The character development is outstanding and the writing makes me laugh out loud sometimes. It's one of the books I want to read slowly because I don't want it to end. The author's writing style is very unusual and I'm finding it improving my own writing skills as I finish writing Blink: The magical story of overcoming abuse and abandonment, finding a family, and becoming a champion. If it weren't for my own weekly writing workshops, Blink would take much longer to write!
How to Be a Power Connector by Robinett
I won this book from a networking group that I'm part of. The challenge was to record a video talking about your goals for 2022 and you could win one of three books: Profit First (I'd already read that one and I highly recommend it) and two other books on networking. I chose this one because of the subtitle "The 5 + 50 + 100 Rule for Turning Your Business Network into Profits." Oh yeah! That was very applicable and timely. The words that keep coming to me over the past few weeks are "Collaboration and Affiliations." And the first chapter of this book is "The power of High-Value, Strategic Connections." Chapter 2 is "Friends, Allies, and Power Connectors." Ditto oh yeah! Robinette talks about the 5 mistakes most networkers make and I'd have to admit that when I first began networking, I made all five of them. This book dropped in my lap and like any good coach, is saving me tons of wasted time and resources making unnecessary mistakes. I'm using it in my coaching with authors to build sustainable systems for marketing the books we're publishing.
No Longer Untouchable by my friend Sarah Davidson-Tracy
Sarah is a friend of mine and a human rights advocate. I support all authors who have published a book so I purchased this before it was even in print. This is Sarah's story about four women who as children were snatched from their homes in Nepal and sold as sex slaves. What they overcame brings light and freedom to the world.
Stories like Sarah's need to be written and they deserve to be heard. If you have a story to tell, I'd love to chat with you about it and listen to see if I can add value or not.
The Gift, Poems by Hafiz
Hafiz was a Persian poet and this book has become very dear to me. I read one poem at a time and soak it in. One of my favorites is "The Sun Never Says"
Even
After
All this time
The sun never says to the earth,
"You owe Me."
Look
What happens
With a love like that,
It lights the
Whole
Sky.
The Art of Living by Thich Nhat Hahn. I started listening to this book a few weeks before Hahn died. There was so much rich wisdom in it that I couldn't write it down fast enough so I bought the Kindle version so I could copy the notes into my journal.
